What is TIR?

The UN system for road transit

TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) is the customs transit system of the UN TIR Convention of 1975. Goods travel in a customs-approved, sealed truck or container under one TIR Carnet, which is both the customs document and the guarantee for duties and taxes.

Customs at each transit border check the seals and the carnet instead of opening and re-declaring the cargo, so trucks cross faster and more predictably. The Convention has 78 contracting parties, and TIR transport can be carried out in around 65 countries.

  • Duties and taxes suspended during transit
  • Controls at departure and destination are recognised along the way
  • Electronic pre-declaration (TIR-EPD) for advance cargo information
SecureSealed load compartment, checked at every border.
FasterSeal checks instead of full inspections at transit borders.
Lower costNo national guarantees or repeated paperwork in each country.
Wide reachEurope, the Caucasus, Central Asia, China, the Middle East and North Africa.
